Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a structured, goal-directed therapeutic intervention in which a trained animal and its certified handler work alongside a provider to support a person's mental, emotional, physical, or social well-being. It involves defined therapeutic goals, professional training, and measurable outcomes — distinct from simply having a pet or emotional support animal.
-
No. An emotional support animal (ESA) provides comfort through its presence but is not trained for specific therapeutic work. Animal-assisted therapy involves a certified handler-and-animal team working toward defined therapeutic goals within a structured intervention. DGG's therapy animals are trained, evaluated, and certified for this work.

DGG provides therapy for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, autism spectrum disorder, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, grief and loss, social anxiety, and stress. Sessions are also available for hospice and end-of-life support. Contact us if you're unsure whether AAT is appropriate for your situation.
-
Sessions typically run 45 to 60 minutes, though this can be adjusted based on individual needs, setting, and goals. For certain populations — including those with dementia or in hospice care — shorter, more frequent visits may be recommended.
-
No referral is required. You can contact DGG directly to discuss your needs and set up an appointment. If you are currently working with a therapist, counselor, or physician, we are happy to coordinate with your existing care team.
-
Our primary therapy animals are dogs. DGG therapy animals are certified, professionally evaluated for temperament and training, and regularly assessed to ensure they are well-suited to therapeutic work. If you have an allergy or specific preference, please let us know when you reach out.
-
Coverage varies widely by provider and plan. DGG is a nonprofit organization, and we offer sliding-scale and donation-supported pricing to ensure services are accessible to those who could not otherwise afford them. Contact us to discuss options for your situation.
